Jamaica shows up in the world's music, sports, and jokes. Children still need the country itself, not a costume. This guide is for parents in Jamaica and for Jamaican families in the diaspora teaching ages 3–9.
Name, capital, flag
Jamaica is an island country in the Caribbean Sea. The capital is Kingston. The flag is a gold saltire that divides triangles of green and black. Look at a real flag with your child before anyone memorizes a slogan. The colors are often explained as the sun, the land, and the strength of the people. Keep that explanation short and check a trusted source if you want the official wording.
Say Jamaica. Do not use it as the stand-in for every other island. A child from Kingston and a child from Saint Lucia are not having the same history lesson.
Language
Jamaican Patwa is a language. It is not "broken English," and it is not a punchline. Many children move between Patwa and school English depending on who is in the room. Both can be skilled. In the portal, Patois Word Wizard is a word game, not a grammar court. If a joke in a cartoon mocks the accent, you can say, "We do not do that in this house."
Food songs, told honestly
